Five Red Lipsticks

I've managed to take a spare moment out of studying (these university exams are killing me) to bring you a post all about my five favorite red lipsticks. I'm quite the lipstick junkie (slight understatement) and red is a colour I wear almost on a daily basis so I thought I would let ya'll know which five are my top picks!

*All the prices shown are the Australian price and will vary depending on your country (your country will most likely be cheaper), links have been added for Australians to purchase these items from our stores*

5. Lime Crime Lipstick- Glamour 101 ($25 available from Verge Girl & Princess Polly)

This was actually the very first red lipstick that I bought to wear for fun (let's try and forget the horrible red I chose to wear for various ballet concerts). Lime Crime lipsticks are all very pigmented with a lovely creamy formula, allowing for easy fuss-free application. Glamour 101 is a deep red with plum undertones that would certainly suit many different skin types.

4. NARS Lipstick- Red Lizard ($39 available from Mecca Cosmetica & Mecca Maxima)

I can't get enough of NARS right now (along with Hourglass Cosmetics... but I'll leave that discussion for another day!). This lipstick is very pigmented, matte and therefore very long lasting. As a matte lipstick, Red Lizard does not feather or bleed out onto the skin, but a lip liner should be worn if you don't want to have to re-apply your lipstick through out the day. On the Mecca website, this lipstick looks like a bright, dark pink, but I assure you it's not! If you like a slightly darker than normal red, this is the one for you!

3. MAC Lipstick- Ruby Woo ($36 available from MAC counters)

A classic MAC lipstick. This is the first thing that comes to mind when someone utters the words "classic red lip". A very matte formula, this lipstick lasts all day, though I do find it quite drying. To keep things nice and neat I like to use a lip liner but it really isn't necessary with this lipstick. If you're new to red lipstick or want a classic red shade, I would definitely check this out!

2. Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro- The Red #400 ($52 available from Giorgio Armani counters in David Jones)

Literally the only reason this lipstick is not in my number one spot is because of the price. This is so seriously expensive and I was only able to justify this purchase with the promise that I would wear it nearly every day, which I have, thankfully. This is a typical liquid lipstick that lasts for hours on end but it is surprisingly not matte. This lipstick sets just enough for it to not budge but retains a gorgeous glossy finish that is not sticky (I can't stand sticky lip products, hence why I never wear lipgloss). The applicator for this is a dream. Seriously, if I ever had to make my own lipstick I would attempt to re-create this amazing applicator, which is so easy to use. At first it seems like your regular doe foot applicator but this one is so soft, un-fuzzy (sounds weird, but you know what I mean) and flexible (!!??). The only problem with this product is the fact that it bleeds and feathers on me if I'm not wearing a lip liner. My lip liner of choice is the MAC Pro-longwear lipliner in the shade "Kiss Me Quick". If you have the opportunity to save up for one of these bad boys, I highly recommend that you do, just make sure you choose a colour that you will wear all the time so you get your money's worth!

1. Lime Crime Velvetine- Red Velvet ($26 available from Verge Girl & Princess Polly)

Wearing Lime Crime Makeup's Velvetine in Red Velvet.
I would go as far as calling this stunning red my 'signature' lip colour. I've been using Red Velvet for about a year now and I always come back to it. This is a beautiful, bold, incredibly matte liquid lipstick that has phenomenal lasting power. The only downside to this lipstick would be it is quite drying, especially if you're not used to wearing it. Simply use a lip treatment or scrub and you've got this problem covered! The Lime Crime Velvetines all come in a tube along with a doe foot applicator which is fairly easy to use. I have to admit, the doe foot applicator's have definitely changed in recent months, my first three Red Velvet Velvetines had a much smaller, more even applicator where as now the applicator is slightly larger with a lot more 'fuzz' on top- which causes unwanted lines and flicks all over the lips. This is simply fixed with a cotton bud but for those of you that don't like to fuss, it's certainly something to consider. Despite this small change, I am constantly buying new tubes of the stuff (I swear I must be keeping Lime Crime in business) and wearing Red Velvet for all occasions. The Lime Crime Velvetines are exactly half the price of the Giorgio Armarni Lip Maestro so while you don't get as much product, it is definitely much more affordable!

I hope you found a new red lipstick that you want to try out! Let me know what your favorite is!
Love from Maddie xo

    1. Hey anonymous! I've tried many red drugstore lipsticks but in this case I prefer the brands shown here! I like to collect many things (makeup, anime, manga) so I like to save up and purchase things that I think will be quality products (after doing research of course)! xx

  2. Which brand would you recommend when wanting a rather dark red lipstick?

    1. Hello! I would recommend checking out NARS and MAC lipsticks, but there's also a dark red/plum coloured Velvetine if you can get your hands on them (I would not recommend buying from the official Lime Crime website, just do some research). xx
